Simon Buckley

Simon lives in Salford and through his work explores themes of transition, frequently within the urban environment. This interest led him to begin the Not Quite Light project, which examines themes of heritage and regeneration at dawn and dusk.Several commissions have arisen due to this work, archiving the construction of new developments. It also led to a major collaboration with 5 Plus Architects called “You Live With Us, We Live With You”, which resulted in a limited edition book.

Simon’s work has been published nationally and internationally and he has exhibited in the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong and China.

Describe what you were like at school in three words?

Non-conformist

Curious

Ambitious

What’s the best thing about Manchester?

The best thing about Manchester is the sense that here, anything is possible.

What has been your biggest disappointment?

Being too lazy as a teenager.

How do you relax?

I walk at night. I also read, watch films, listen to music.

The soundtrack to your life. Which song?

‘Films’ by Gary Numan. Or ‘Life’s What You Make It’ by Talk Talk.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

I’ve often considered this, like so many of us do. If I’m going to bother I’d like to go back a long way, to when Britain was still joined to France, and you could walk into a place where the North Sea now is. But actually, I’d rather visit the future.

What's your most over-used phrase

“Actually”. I say it all the time. And “You know what I mean?” I drive myself mad.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

That we learn the most from pain. And, also, don’t be so bloody cocky.
