You can’t be what you can’t see
StateTalking connects State Schools across Manchester with relatable role models.
Our speakers represent an amazing cross-section of the city; every type of person doing every type of job. The talks help the young people of Manchester to think bigger and beyond what they think is possible for them.
We also support schools to mobilise their alumni networks.
If any School is interested in a talk or to discuss their alumni network please complete this form. All state maintained secondary schools, academies and colleges (11 – 18) in Greater Manchester can apply for a talk.
State Talking is currently sponsored by Russell WBHO, one of the north west’s largest and most high profile construction companies. Employees from the business will also be among those to give their time and expertise to the initiative.
Andrew Russell, joint managing director of Russell WBHO, said: “Children and young people need role models and State Talking is doing an amazing job of putting highly successful and yet totally relatable professionals in front of young audiences across Greater Manchester. I truly believe that these interactions can motivate, inspire, focus and ultimately change lives”.
What schools say
We have found State Talking talks very beneficial to the school since they have opened our students’ eyes to the world beyond St Matthew’s. We often speak to them about becoming the ‘best version of themselves’ and the talks are a great example of explaining to them first-hand how they can achieve this.
Head St Matthew’s RC High School
Our students were truly inspired by the speakers and enjoyed the interactive nature of the talks. Hearing about different jobs and being advised on preparing for their future was really motivational. Questions were welcomed and encouraged and it was great to see students engaging and wanting to learn more.

StateTalking have brought some really interesting and insightful speakers to our attention and into our school for assemblies and other meaningful interactions with our students. These interactions have increased our student's awareness and developed critical thinking skills. After assemblies, our students are enthused and have a lot of well thought out questions. StateTalking have really took the time to get to know our school and our student's needs. We really appreciate their attention to detail and their creative approach to allow some of our student interactions to be delivered virtually.
