RAF veteran Sarah Harvey proved to be a great role model when it came to introducing students to the concept of squiggly careers.
Starting out as a network technician at Brize Norton, Sarah was twice deployed to Afghanistan and formed part of the at the 2012 London Olympics, before retraining in software engineering. She now works in a management role in IT with Lloyds Banking Group.
Her message to Year 10 Stockport students at was not to worry if they don’t end up on path they imagined.
Thinking about the experience after the event on LinkedIn, she posted: “I didn’t end up on the career path that I pictured in my head when I was 14-15 years old….did you?
She continued… “Not gonna lie, I was a little anxious as it’s been a fair few years since I’ve stood up in front of a large group of teenagers.
“They were great though! I was genuinely blown away by some of the thoughtful questions they asked me at the end of my presentation, including ‘Was being in the military more mentally or physically challenging?’ and ‘If circumstances changed and you were asked to re-join a couple of years after you left, would you go back given the chance?’
