“Careers are built not chosen” speaker tells Trafford students

A StateTalking speaker caught the imagination of a group of Year 7 students in Trafford when she told that that “most jobs they”ll do don’t exist yet”.

Grace Rothery, chief of staff at energy software company ENSEK, spoke to Urmston Grammar pupils in a post-exam period assembly.

She talked about her own career, which included qualifying and working in law, before pivoting into leadership. She shared the insights that careers are “built not chosen” and that careers aren’t ladders.

Other nuggets of wisdom imparted by Grace  included “say yes to things that scare you” and not to dwell on mistakes – it’s what you do next that people remember.

The school said: “Huge thanks to Grace Rothery, chief of staff at ENSEK, for delivering a brilliantly inspirational and insightful talk to our Year 7 students.

“She spoke about her career pathway from school, with lots of advice on strategies for optimising opportunities and building transferable skills and resilience throughout the journey.”

The school said it was “fantastic to see Year 7 so engaged and asking lots of questions at the end” and that it was  a “great experience for them as they finish their important week of end-of-year exams”.
